Short Sermon by: Hamir "The Storyteller" Achacoso
46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” - Mark 10:46-49
We see in the story that the blind man named Bartimaeus was desperate to meet Jesus. Well, he should be. There are lots of people who were following Jesus and some of these are those who rebuked him and told him to be quiet. It is clear that they do not like or care for him. He had a huge disadvantage against these people for he cannot see his way going to Jesus. He was a blind man and a beggar. Can you picture out how hard his life could be? He never gave up. He shouted the name of Jesus and he also called Him "Son of David or Ben Daveed".
According to some Bible Scholars, the title "Son of David" is a Messianic title or the promised deliverer of the Jewish nation prophesied in the Hebrew Bible.
Does he have other choices than to shout and call Jesus? Can you imagine the buzz that Jesus' followers are making? Can you imagine how loud was his voice when he shouted "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me"? People rebuked him as if they were saying "Shut up". However, the blind man never gave up and he shouted all the more, much louder and more intense.
Hmmmm!? Interesting?

Now the story is getting deeper and more profound. When Bartimaeus called Jesus "Son of David", he somehow declared to the people that Jesus is the Messiah.
This blind begg ar knew who really Jesus was?
Maybe this was the reason why Jesus stopped and and asked people to call Bartimaeus. To bring the blind beggar to him.
Now who is calling who?
The blind beggar called Him not just by His name but also saying or declaring to the people that this Jesus whom you are following is the Messiah. We can see that the blind man was not really blind at all. He saw in his spirit who Jesus really was.
Jesus was just passing by Jericho and I believe he does not have the intention (or maybe the TIME to stay if you wish) of healing or preaching there. Maybe that is the reason why a large crowd was following him.
The large follower / crowd who does not have concern for this blind beggar. Remember, they rebuked him and want him to be quiet. They have all the reason to follow him. Jesus healed the sick, preached the kingdom and fed the people. They followed Jesus but somehow did not know Him. They just know His name and His activities but never totally know who Jesus is.
Now, may you follow Jesus and may you see in your spirit that He is the Messiah, the anointed one, the Lord, the savior. May you call His name and have the intention of knowing Him more and more everyday. May you not surrender when people say "Stop, shut up". May you shout all the more and may you be a blessing to other people by declaring the name, the person Jesus. May you not rebuke or hinder someone who is seeking and learning about Jesus. Grace and peace and love to you.
